In the past two years, Orem Public Safety employees have arranged for a fire truck
and an ambulance
to be donated to Peru, a country where emergency services are badly needed. Tana and I were also able to visit Peru this past March, along with Orem fireman Lane Pace and his wife Theresa, and spend some time with David Cornejo and his family. David is the founder and president of Juan Mejia Baca
, a private educational company that has a university, high school, elementary school, and cooking school in Chiclayo, Peru’s 4th largest city. We were warmly welcomed and treated like rock stars while we were there.
On Monday, I was finally able to return the favor. The Cornejo family came to Utah to meet with Orem City leaders and local university representatives. It was wonderful to visit with David and to discuss the way our Public Safety department is structured. David is interested in Orem because we have an efficient and unique arrangement of police, firefighters, and EMTs all working as a part of the same department. David has plans to run for mayor of Chiclayo and wanted to see how a department of this kind might function.
After exchanging some gifts with the Cornejos, several of our Public Safety officers treated the family to a closer look at some of our vehicles and how they work. The family really enjoyed the presentation. The boys even wanted to see how it feels in the back of a police car!
I wish David luck in his Mayoral bid in Chiclayo. He is a good leader with a strong desire to serve the people of Peru, and it has been a privilege to share how we do things here in Orem.
